When to Refer

There are no specific guidelines cited by the American Thyroid Association or the European Thyroid Association (ETA guidelines not yet available) about when to refer patients living with HIV who also have thyroid disease.

In the absence of specific guidelines, patients should be treated according to existing national guidelines for thyroid disease, with consideration given to any potential drug-drug interactions.

In particular, if patients present with symptoms suggestive of thyroid disease, referral to an endocrinologist should be considered for treatment and monitoring in line with concurrent antiretroviral therapy.
